When summer is here in full swing then it may be time to head back into the house during the heat of the day with the air conditioning blowing through the house keeping you cool, but what do you do when there is no cold air blowing? Before calling an AC repairman, there are some things that you should check.
Check the electrical system
This may seem like a simple solution – check to ensure that the air conditioner is plugged in! Make sure that there is power going to the unit. A non-working air conditioner could be something as simple as a power outage in your area or a loose connection from the power supply to the air conditioner.
An air conditioner can take a lot of power and can easily trip the breaker. After resetting the breaker, if the air conditioner unit begins to work, monitor it to see if it continues to flip the breaker. Some air conditioning units have outside switches, or occasionally inside by a door.
Before calling the AC repairman, check to ensure that all the switches are on. If your power is properly running to your AC unit, an AC repairman like the experts at Bold City Heating & Air can help you diagnose and fix any issues to get your cooling system working again.
Check the thermostat of the air conditioner
There are a couple additional things to check before calling the AC repairman. If the temperature outside is extremely hot, the air conditioner may not be able to cool the house down as quickly. This does not mean the unit is not working, it could just mean that additional cooling is needed, or it’s taking longer for your house to reach the desired temperature.
If you own a dual unit, for both heating and cooling, ensure that the switch is in the right direction for air conditioning. This is a common occurrence at the beginning of a new season.
Lastly, some thermostat units are battery powered. Ensure that there are fresh batteries for the thermostat.
Things to check on the unit itself before calling the AC repairman
One of the biggest setbacks in air conditioning units is not having proper maintenance. There are air filters that need to be cleaned on a regular basis. If these filters are clogged the air conditioner cannot pump the cool air through the home and it may cause the unit to shut down. If the drain pan has water in it, there may be a leak in line, which will prevent the air conditioner from working properly. The last thing to check on the air conditioner before calling an AC repairman is to ensure that the vents in your home are open. During the spring months vents are often closed. If they remain closed, cold air is not able to travel through the home.
